LG vs Samsung 22X Which one better ??? Any real experience ???

i like samsung. I bought this one a while ago.

Been using an IDE LG burner for a couple years. Works well, no problems. Burns single and double layer dvds fine.

The lg's that I use at work have gone out many times.

These things are pretty much commoditized now days. Both LG and Samsung are reputable brand. If you worried about a particular drive I would suggest reading the reviews from newegg. Most of time the reviews are useful.

I've had this one for a couple years, have burned several hundred discs (Lightscribe, dual layer, cd's, etc) and the only coasters have been software or user-caused...no problems with the drive.

the link is for Samsung SH-S222A, the IDE model, like last time, that's no S223A in newegg.

If given a choice I'd get an SATA drive if only for better cabling and airflow inside the case.

Be advised that this model does not have audio (analog or digital) out.

Does anyone know how to convert the NewEgg model number for this drive to a Samsung model number? I called Samsung and was told NewEgg modifies the drives so Samsung firmware updates don't work.

As for airflow with SATA, PATA does not cause airflow problems, can we please stop repeating myths? Airflow is not blocked by a ribbon cable, because airflow is not light, it moves around obstacles due to pressure differences. Airflow limitations in a case are due to intake and exhaust factors.

SATA cables are a lot nicer to look at when installed though, and not having to be mindful of master and slave jumpers and positions on a cable is nice too.

A firmware flasher checks for an ID string in the currently flashed firmware and compares to it's own ID string. It is possible an OEM drive would have a different string and not flash with the retail firmware, as an example this is often the case with OEM motherboards versus the retail board and bios. However, tools like Uniflash can force flash a mobo bios, and other tools exist for forcing optical drives to be flashed but you must use great caution to be sure you have the right bios as it could brick the drive if it isn't.

In this case, Newegg clearly lists the model number on the product page, and it will be on the label so we know the firmware is compatible. It is possible Samsung, LG and others would use a different ID string for an OEM drive, but it would be shipped to Newegg like that, Newegg does not alter the drives themselves. Now having written that, I've often bought OEM drives from Newegg and never had a problem flashing them to newer bios, but I have never bought or flashed this particular drive model.
