I got one of these for xmas from a friend. Its awesome. So he ordered the $11 generic one and its more or less exactly the same, minus the lock mechanism. Has the same little push-switch and the clips are interchangable.

However I should mention that joby's customer service is outstanding. My gorillapod was accidentally damaged by me. My friend who purchased it contacted them and they asked for my info. So i contacted them and three days later I had a new one. I doubt the guys who sell the generic one would handle it so well.
