This is a great price for an external 1TB hard drive. I'm not 100% sure about the manufacturer. It's a pity that there are 2 mail-in rebates involved or else I'd be tempted.

i didn't get my mail in rebate. The email support kept taking me around in circles.

The drive, however, is excellent. I hear there is a Western Digital inside the enclosure.

These guys suck on sales support. I sent them at least ten emails asking about their drives, do they even acknowledge the email [HELL NO], needless to say they never responded. I would hate to buy a product from them and get engineering support-I can just imagine-no even an Indian guy from Bangladesh.

Will you get your rebate(s) back? Only the Fantom knows. But this is a good drive if you care to risk it. I've also heard that WD drives are inside.

    #5- pass. It's a trouble-plagued Seagate, and no eSata.

$89 at Buy.com after (1) $20 rebate. If Fantom company doesn't respond to customer support requests for info, what makes you so sure that they'll respond to RMA requests should the drive fail? Granted the drive appears to be amongst one of the better ones, I'll think I'll hold out for a better deal with a more reliable mfg. Costco deal (add $4.99 for shipping) looks good, but no membership available.

You need ESP to get your rebate. I recommend looking for a good medium before purchasing.

why is it green? is it energystar efficient or is this some marketing ploy?

I got the WD 1TB My Book Essential from Dell for 109 shipped a few days ago.

#9: it's designed to be green: low power drive and frequent/sustained idling. Strangly, the manual doesn't talk at all about it's "greeness". The only references are in the product summary, marketing blurbs, side of box, etc. No real details.

I like mine. Haven't gotten either rebate back yet. Got it for $96 shipped after two rebates and taxes at Buy.com.

Buttmunch-ing evidently has toxified reasoning to butt flavor innuendo. #5 is correct. The Seagate are fine, although I'd recommend waiting for another $85 bargain for these. $85 for 1TM is underwhelming, even with the cheap fanless disk-toasting box.

Anyone know if this would work with a Dish Network VIP 622?

never heard of this brand... but I am in the market to get a new external drive. I will keep my eyes open for another brand like seagate maybe

i like the costo deal and im a member. (#5)
firewire/esata would be nice, but not at this pricepoint.

it does seem to have sketchy reviews on newegg:

costco should be good about returns and no rebates are involved.
    should i go for it?
