I agree. Unless you desperately need to save a few dollars or buy a smaller drive today, it makes more sense to either buy a 1 TB drive or wait for prices to fall a little more.

#1, I missed that $80 WD 1TB black drive (WD1001FALS). Could you please point me in the right direction?

Lemmee see...
gxharxdrivx has a 1TB "white label" 1-yr warranty 16MB cache drive for ~$85. [Who backs that warranty? Good old "white label"?]
Newegg has a ½TB WD black 5-yr warranty 32MB reputed to be fast, quiet, baconrunning and reliable
Unless you desperately need 1TB to store all your kiddie ****, this looks like a pretty decent deal.

#7, I don't think you can compare:
1) Hitachi to WD reliabilty
2) 3 yr vs 5 yr
3) 16 mg cache vs 32 mg cache
Yes, it's twice as big, but most people won't use 500gb let alone 1tb - unless your saving tons of video and pix. Save the money and get a better quality drive. This be my worthless, uneducated, crappy opinion...

Hitachi disks (formerly ibm)have been state of the art. They invented and commercialized GMR which is responsible for today's higher density. The mindless rants are just that.
I've had a $65 1TB Hitachi running for about 4 mos now. It is quiet and reliable. I decided to get another one for $73 (incl. rebate + CA tax)yesterday. My only hesitation was whether to get yet another "small" disk (1TB instead of Seagate 1.5TB for about $95 when it is discounted).
True about the smaller cache, but the effect is minimal.

These WD Black HDDs are fantastic! I would strongly recommend spending a bit more, regardless of what size harddrive you are trying to buy, and buying one of these Black editions. They are fast, reliable, come with 5 year warranties, and are just overall great buys. That being said, the 640GB version was just selling for $70 last week and the 1TB version was selling for $100, both with free shipping and a free SATA cable on Newegg which I think are better deals. (So unless you desperately need another harddrive now, it might be better to wait for another similar deal on the 640GB or 1TB version)
