Buy.com has the Addlogix Lan-Guard All-In-One Internet Security Gateway - LG-2000 for $150 with free shipping. n All-In-One Internet Security Gateway that provides inexpensive, comprehensive and multifunction UTM protection against all worms, viruses, spyware, malicious attacks, and other security threats.
Looks like this thing is either a packet inspection engine or transparent web proxy. Depending upon the number of users and WAN link, a little appliance like this might not have the horsepower to keep up. It's also probably buggy. I would be very skeptical of this being any good without 3rd party reviews.
If you're a Linux geek you can roll your own but that requires work and a piece of hardware to run it all on.
why i don't trust the product? the absolute language:
"protection against all worms, viruses, spyware, malicious attacks, and other security threats"
do norton & mcafee make such statements in the face of 0-days? (i wouldn't know as i don't run windows.)
it's probably signature-based, and a signature-based scanning engine is only as good as its signature database, which has to be updated regularly, but the product page makes no mention of an update subscription. i doubt addlogix is going to give the service away as that's the popular business model (sell the device at a loss and make profit on the recurring service). and if the service is required but the company is hoping to surprise you with the subscription cost after you buy the device, then what other "surprises" is addlogix not telling you about.
You guys aren't being cynical, it is true. There is no way this can provide absolute protection. Even if it wasn't signature based it still wouldn't be able to keep up with how fast people are putting out new worms and malware. Also, #1 is also correct, this has to inspect EVERYTHING going through it. I'm sorry, but I highly doubt that this could keep up with some homes. Especially if people download a lot or play online games.
