Akai was, briefly (and some time ago), a pretty decent midrange company. They returned to their bargain basement (and junk) roots the last I knew, but I hadn't really seen much out of them in years, so hard to way the quality of what they are peddling these days.

That contrast ratio can't be good for a 1080p HDTV can it?

Maybe things have improved but these sets were basically disposables a couple of years ago. The reviews on them were generally pretty bad.

I love my 42" akai! Awesome value and gorgeous picture!

With that said my buddy bought one from sams club the same day I did when they were on clearance about a year ago and his had a problem, stopped tuning in HD. It was covered under warranty by akai though, and they sent someone out to replace what he said is the only problem with these sets, four capacitors that go bad. He replaced them in 10 minutes and said you wont have any more problems with this.

Akai used to be the division of Sony that did lots of leading edge stuff to test the consumer waters. I don't know if this is still so.

800:1 contrast ratio!!! WOW! That's almost as bright as a chalk board! I'll take 2...
