802.11g, not n. I doubt the claims about its range. Reviews vary, main problems appear to be that you must download drivers from the manufacturer site, and performance is inconsistent.
Estimated ranges are often something like "from this mountain top to the next one, clear day, no other wifi traffic, settings tweaked for distance". Even so, a higher antenna gain and output power should still increase range over what it would otherwise be. Get a directional antenna on a mast if you really need 1 mi.
On the other hand there are auctions on eBay for this and other 8187L chipped ~ 1W adapters that look like they'll stay under $20, though I don't believe the > 1W ratings on some of the generics and it might be worth a buck or two to stick with the Alfa.
