I had these before my dog chewed them. They sounded excellent, especially considering the company used to make the lowest-end computer speakers. I paid like $35 at BB when they came out, so this is a good deal.

How did the dog like them? Any possibility we will see him on American Idol or any other talent show in the future?

#1, it's funny how things change. Years ago, Altec Lansing was a manufacturer of high end audio equipment (mostly loudspeakers) and together with JBL and a few others made up the what was referred to as the west coast sound of high fidelity audio. They produced a sound that, although it appeared relatively flat across the 20 to 20,000 Hz bandwidth graph, was heavy in the mid-range, so it was preferred by people who liked emphasized voices and guitars. The east coast sound was represented by Acoustic Research (AR), Advent, KLH and others. Their sound (also flat from 20 to 20,000 Hz, I still don't know how t hat worked) was heavier in the bass end. This came from acoustic suspension speakers with large woofers. The Bose 901's (one of my favorites, but way out of my price range in the 1970's) were kind of a cross between the two sounds.

I'm not sure why I'm telling you this, I guess to correct the misconception that Altec Lansing was always a company that made low end products. Here's a link to the Wikipedia article on Altec Lansing:

Here's a link to a better explanation of the east coast west coast sound than I can give:

Now I can go back to reading about the vintage stereo loudspeakers, that this thread lead me to.
