I got this a couple of weeks ago for $6.00. It works well with an old laptop hard drive I had. It's very basic. Just an aluminum case with a plastic cap on one end and the pcb board to conect your hard drive to the USB cable on the other end. The USB cable has two conectors on one end in case your pc doesn't provide enough power for the drive with just one. I've tried it on three pc's and it worked with just one of the conectors on all of them.

I have one of these and it won't address a 160Gb disc. 80GB is fine, making me think it's a firmware thing.
I just bought another one for $10 and this one looks better.
The other USB connector is for second drive;you have to connect a HD to the first connector( continuation of the main USB cable)before you can use the other end.
use 2 HDs to clone or whatever.
Once you go SATA, you can't go back to IDE!
Do not buy this if you don't have the IDE drive already. This is because IDE laptop drives cost more nowadays for whatever reason.
If you're building from scratch, definitely purchase an enclosure that takes a Sata drive. Sata enclosures are all over ebay for $6-$8 and free shipping.
For cheap laptop hard drives check Geeks.com or eBay.
i agree with #6. great way to reuse an old ide laptop drive. thats about it. use sata otherwise.
#4... #1 is correct. The goofy cable is to get more power out of the usb hub in order to power the drive. i have needed it on some machines. the cable is also handy for charging a phone without completely connecting it.
I even used one of these to run a laptop drive on an unslung nslu2.
