If you live near a Microcenter, you can get a retail box 840 3.2 GHz for $60.

Or you could get the Phenom II X4 830 Deneb 2.8GHz Processor - OEM for $49.

damn microcenter, if I lived near one I'd be saving so much money!!! or ... maybe I'd be wasting so much money ;]
Microcenter is good. Their $50 or $40 rebate when buying a combo mobo/proc is the best deal anywhere. Here in Chicago there is a Tiger's direct down the street. MC will match their prices AND give you 5% back.
I Have both Microcenter / Fry's bear by and I never buy any CPU from Newegg ever. Newegg just simply cannot compete with Fry's or Microcenter @ CPU category.
840>830?
For gaming, 830 > 840 since it has some L3 cache helpful for intensive graphics.
For everything else, 840 > 830. Clock speed is better.
I sure wish I had a Microcenter in my state. I am in the midst of installing a new AM3+ motherboard and 8GB of DDR3 into my son's old Athlon II X2 245 system. The original board died, and since it was only runing 4GB of DDR2 I figured it was time to update some of his hardward. This would be a no-brainer additional upgrade for the 830 at $50. I already went overboard on the other parts, or I would get this from the Egg for $80. Well, at least it is something to look forward to down the road.
