I got this chip, not that crazy about it. i found that many apps runs better on the dual core processor. I think it might have to do with xp sp3. thinking about reverting xp sp2. maybe that makes a difference who knows.
#1: there shouldn't be a problem sticking with sp3.
Some websites state that disabling the XP indexing service(a new addition from SP3) can improve performance.
You could also try overclocking a bit. It is true that most applications will not benefit at all from having additional cores. So, if you overclock the CPU, you'll get faster single-threaded performance.
The Phenom II CPU's are quite easy to overclock, especially these Black Edition ones. By simply going into your BIOS and increasing the vcore and pushing the multiplier up, you should be able to run this at around 3.6 to 3.7ghz, if you've got a good CPU cooler. Just be sure to check online what vcore voltages are safe, and what temperature the CPU can safely run at.
If you're using the stock AMD cooler, you shouldn't push it quite that far. But, you can just push the multiplier up without raising the vcore, say, maybe go for 3.4ghz. Just be sure to watch the CPU temps. After setting an overclock, download some software to stress test your CPU, like CPU Burn In. Run 4 instances of that(one for each CPU core), and use software like speedfan to monitor your CPU temperature. If it gets too hot, or crashes, just turn down the multiplier a bit, and try again.
Also, are you running DDR2-1066 RAM? That speed grade of RAM is quite cheap nowadays, and the Phenom CPU's support that RAM speed by default.
I bought this a couple of months ago and paid $210 for it. It rocks! So fast!
#2's comment on XP's SP3 indexing service is correct. Was a noticeable slowdown om my system after SP3 was installed. Just disabled it and back to normal.
Ben says this is the 'Black' Edition, However, No where does ZipZoomFly say it's the 'Black' Edition, and their image shown says for Display Purpose.

yeah the box looks red, right?
#5 there is no X4 940 that isn't black edition... so it has to be black edition.
THX FOR THE ADVICE. WILL TRY, BUT STILL MAY REVERT TO SP2 AS SP3 CRASHESMY PC WHEN I INSTALL MY ATT PLUG N SHARE WIRELESS CARD
SURE YOU'RE WELCOME THANKS FOR SHOUTING AT US.
Im gonna try disabling the indexing.
Indexing, remote PC access, messenger, and a crapload of other stuff is easily disabled with a utility called xp-antispy. Everytime I reload the XP OS (about once per year) I do a standard "clean-up" procedure which involves disabling the above, and a lot of other things.
And the clean-up does help with speed, by at leat 10% - 50% depending on the applications.
#11: thanks for the tip. I'll have to give that program a shot.
