Built by Seasonic. Good PSU, especially at that price.
Yep, it seems to match Seasonic's 500W ATX 2.x configurations right down to amps on the rails and cable configuration (2xPCIe, 1xSSI Server connector, etc...). I have a Seasonic S12 500W which differs with an internal-facing 120mm exhaust fan, instead of the 80mm external ("ET" model), but I noted Seasonic offers an "ES" model that seems to exactly match this.
For most systems, the Ultras will do fine, and give you a 70% efficiency closer to max load, possibly as high as 80% with lower current usage. But when you're starting to suck up 450+Ws, I recommend these 80% efficient solutions when you're butting up against 500, 550 or 600W.
#2, I have one of the Ultra FAR PSUs in my machine now. It's too loud. From what I gather, it's luck of the draw whether or not the 120mm "silent" fan really is quiet. I'm going to RMA it, but ordered one of these Antec units anyway. I've heard it's pretty quiet, but not totally silent. I ordered it over the weekend when shipping was free, but tax was $8.
joe,
I finally put my FAR Ultra PSU into my rig and geez, the fan was about 70 decibels. I used to have a supertower with 6 scsi drives and that was nothing compared to the sound of the Ultra PSU. After Vista installed, I rebooted a few times, flashed my mobo bios and lo and behold, I got lucky and the PSU became silent. Have no clue why that happened but no complaints now.
calaxa, are you sure the fan is still going?
There's no way for Windows to control the fan speed, so either you moved the PSU in just the right way or the fan stopped spinning.
I read some user reviews of the unit and people say they have to put their ear up to it to hear it. You can hear mine from outside my office.
joe,
The fan is still running. It was real odd. That fan was so loud I could hear it from other end of house. I kept mumbling to myself that you get what you pay for and I was definitely going out today to buy a new PSU. I know the fan is not controlled by the OS and the only thing I can think of would be power draw. After I flashed the mobo, it went to near silent. Put a flashlight up to see if fan was still running and it was. Maybe I knocked it into place when I opened up the case to adjust the RAM.
LOL, plp here can't get enough of the Ultra PSU, heh? Even on an Antec PSU thread. But I can contest on the Ultra PSU, it is just as quiet as my Antec PSU, I had to put my ears next to both of them to hear anything. Then why do we go for the much more expensive Antec PSUs? Maybe it last longer? Only time would tell...
DH, you are lucky! Which Antec PSU do you have? My Ultra PSU is really loud. Is yours the 500w?
calaxa, I'll have to drop mine a few times and see if I can see RMA it. Haha.
Yes, it's a luck of the draw. Never heard any Ultra PSU that's loud.
I have a Linkworld with 3 fans and it's also silent. But Linkworld ripped off my Rebate and didn't contact me. Don't buy from Linkworld.
#10, thanks for the info.
Actually, I just got off the phone with Ultra. They are advance shipping me a new PSU. I'll get to compare it to my existing one. Hopefully I'll get a quiet one.
My apologies to Ben for hijacking this thread, but I've been meaning to take care of this for a while. To help make up for it, I'll click on your link to CompUSA a few times.
I have the Antec Truepower 2.0 380W. The Ultra one I have is 400W.
