I have one of these and it works well - providing backup for a server and a NAS. With 50 year old overhead wiring infrastructure in our neighborhood, this thing intervenes a couple times a year during bad weather.

Note that there's no etehrnet protection offered with this, just phone line.

I know the "regulars" here on Ben's know about replacement battery costs - could this be cheaper than a replacement battery?

^ IIRC the ~ 4AH size in a 350VA APC UPS is about $12, and ~7AH to 8AH replacement for their 550VA UPS about $20, IF you buy it locally as a standard SLA battery instead of buying it direct from APC.

If you can't find it locally or where you can they want a high profit margin, then it'll be about $16 /350VA UPS to $27 /550VA delivered if bought online.

The other question is how old the battery is, if it's been sitting around (whether that be through a low volume battery seller or at an Office Deport warehouse) discharging for a long time then the battery may have drained enough that it doesn't offer the same service life as a fresh one would.

Battery suppliers should have fresh stock or keep them at a proper charge level, while low volume sellers like a local Radio Shack store or Office Depot may not... just something to consider, if I buy a battery locally I want a pocket multimeter with me so I can avoid it if the voltage is pretty low, though once an UPS packaging is opened after purchase that's not as easy to get a refund on just by claiming the voltage is lower than you'd "like" it to be, non-battery-seller employees are not adept at battery tech issues and would probably just tell you it needs charged before use.

Also I mentioned Radio Shack because every now and then they put the 7AH or 8AH /550VA battery they stock on sale for around $15 but their regular price for it is outrageously high.
