Can I change the battery on this thing myself?

You can change the battery but it is not supported by Apple. There are web pages to do it. It is soldered to the logic board, so it is not for the faint of heart.
How good is the FM radio on this?

I would rather buy the refurb from apple and get faster service.
No fm radio, no sd card expansion.. Not even an internal hd that you can replace if it dies on you.
These are nice devices, but should be cheaper and expandable.
