This is the last generation mac mini, not the current. I suppose good if you are looking to get a basic mac. I know the video card is better in the current generation mac mini. I don't think there is much of a bump in CPU from last generation to current.

This would be a good deal if it had a battery and built-in LCD display. As it is, it's an overpriced boat anchor

Memory is upgradeable to only a sad 2GB max.
The GMA950 chipset and graphics can barely handle 720p video and definitely not 1080p video.
Have you ever opened one of these up to upgrade the RAM or hard drive? It's impossible to do without scratching up the case and damaging the underside vent holes.

#3.. They also moved to DDR3 but just (2) DDR3 slots so you will never see the faster bandwidth.

You're better off paying the extra $100 for the newer hardware.
This Intel video makes even basic tasks a kick in the crotch.
Intel is to graphics what Ryan Leaf was the NFL.

The newer one supports dual-monitor set ups too, along with more/ddr3. Pass on this until it's $400.

It was $399 about a month ago when I jumped on the Microcenter deal. They still have 164 of the lower end config for $399, so this may drop further soon.

I have one of these Mac Mini's as my main system in my office. Mine has 2 GB of RAM but is otherwise like this one. It is small, quiet, and very usable running OSX with XP and Ubuntu in Parallels's virtual machines. For $500 with Parallels, I think this a good deal.

I use a Mac Mini in the Office with a RAM upgrade and XP under VMWare. It really really really, I can't stress this enough, sucks. Don't try it.

The GMA 950 gets a bad rap imho. Sure its about the suckiest graphics option short of drawing on ur screen with a crayon, but it works fine with photoshop cs4, older video games, and has no trouble with 720p. I've never tried 1080p on mine so I can't speak of it's effectiveness. Really though, its not a bad setup.

"An Apple a day keeps your funds in disarray"

This was originally coined because the Apple's fragile yet expensive products keep breaking and require frequent replacement.

Yes #9, I am trolling but the difference is that I believe what I am saying.

If your needs are for a basic media computer that's small and quiet, the mini isn't a bad option, and it's comparably priced to a Dell Hybrid (or whatever their SFF PC is called).

That said, Intel graphics, 2.5" 5400 RPM HD, and hard-to-access RAM/HD (and low maximums for both) means whoever buys this needs to have fairly limited requirements for a computer, and place size/noise constraints as a priority.

I saw a Dell Hybrid on sale $400 at Staples. It was smaller than my eternal Plexter 716. Solid looking.

      Ram can be upgraded to 3.3GB ( 2x2GB ) last I checked. It's a chipset limitation.

It should playback 1080p with one of the good media frontends such as plex.

As for longevity, the one Apple laptop I've owned was replaced after 2 years, no fuss, when the 5th display was showing signs of trouble. Say what you will, at least they stand behind their product. Others in my family with Apple laptops have had little or no trouble with theirs.
