What is bacon? Is it something that's only useful if you have other Apple products (I don't)?
If you're not already a slave to the Apple ecosystem, get a Roku instead. If you have a media server, install Plex on it and you can stream through the Roku with a Netflix-like interface.
This will not play avi or xvid files. It has very limited video files it will support.
I use apple TV to stream the content of my ipad to my tv. It is what it is.
