But does it work with Mac?
I didn't read any mention of any new codecs in the new software... Anyone see if they're going to open up mkv (or whatever that container is that the 360 rejects and XBMC can't play smoothly).
This product will soon be obsolete.
#2 that'd be nice, but I doubt it. I think they want people to use the Apple TV primarily to take advantage of their new iTunes movie rental service.
Already obsolete.
CUrrent software and new software is designed to only play Quicktime, however it's extremely easy to hack so that it supports everything, including mkv. Latest hacking methods don't even require opening it up.
my xbox 360 plays tv just great from my media center dvr. suck it apple.
Your xbox 360 can't play mkv, dork.
I'm just wondering if the new software will allow minor hacks as easily as the current rev does. I've been debating between this and a Mac Mini (for the same purpose), but I'm starting to really lean towards this. As long as the new software doesn't freak out and will allow me to watch my divx (OK, xvid) files via nfs, I'm probably sold.
40GB? One-hour of 1080i is about 8GB.
It has a USB 2 port. Does it accept external storage?
I've got Perian running on my AppleTV and I can play MKVs (and AVIs) just fine using a variety of codecs. Check out AwkwardTV for the deetz.
And #10, if you run out of storage space you can upgrade the hard drive (I strongly suspect Apple will be bumping the storage soon), or just stream from a networked PC. It streams from iTunes out of the box, and anyone with *nix experience (or who can read a guide) can make it read AFP, NFS, or SMB (Windows) network shares.
I think the key question here is, can you hack it to play whatever files you already have, streamed from other machines in your house, and retain the ability to rent movies through iTunes?
The key question is why are you so gaaay.
does it comes with shackles?
Ben, please check your sources before attempting to put a deal on your site. If you looked at Steve Jobs keynote online, you would know that he has reduced the price for a new apple tv $229.99 including the upgrade!
+ if I may add if you want a 160 gig apple tv its $329.99 new!!
This is a great device. The remote is not so special.
iThink Steve Jobs is trying to take over the world, but that's my iOpinion.
a decent wireless network DVD player would easily cost as much... would this be a better choice?
