And 60GB looks plenty
Awesome price! I should have waited before purchasing the 704 wifi.
Great deal, or pay $60 less and get a netbook that does more...
Why are these things so blood expensive? Drives, electronics, and labor are cheap.
I would ask Steve Jobs the same question.
Does anybody have experience with these units? How are they overall?
I assume it works the same or better than my 704 wifi. It works fine and does what it should. The screen looks great. These are lighter and more portable (though not by much) than a netbook. I do agree that since netbook have come out, it might be a better deal to get a netbook instead.
#4 - it's to ensure that only the elite use devices like these. Poor peole like you should use paper & pencil.
Although I don't have experience with this particular thing, still have old 20GB Archos Gmini (used it as storage for my DSLR-it has compact flash card reader). After 3 years of intensive use, replaced the battery (bought on eBay for (iPod users, close your ears) 20 bucks) and the player works perfectly. Very sturdy - dropped it several times, nothing happened. You don't need to use any iTunes - just drag and drop your folders and it plays it.
wow this is an amazing bacon catch it!
#9.. Archos has steadily dropped in the crapper since those days. Quality control on both the hardware and software side are absolutely abysmal.
Isn't this what an iPod Touch is for?
#9, iPod replacement batteries sell for around the same price.
Drag-and-drop is a ridiculous argument. Who cares if you're doing the drag-and-drop in iTunes vs. Explorer?
Archos manufacturing standards are pretty bad and the players tend to fall apart, the firmware is awful, they put in locks so you can't upgrade the hard drive, and you need to purchase keyed software plugins if you want support for "exotic formats" such as... divx? Archos sucks.
This is definitely a deal - and is the same one posted a while ago (which is when i got mine). You probably won't find it for a better price anywhere else (and the support from Dell is a plus!). I ordered mine regular (free) shipping and got a note saying i would have it delivered in about 3-4 weeks when it became available. I got it 3 business days later.
As far as the Archos 7 goes, the display quality is great and the ability to record stuff onto it using the DVR docking station is awesome (you can surf the web on your tv using this as well). Sound quality is great (hooked up via monster cable to Bose system in car).
Common complaints (some of which i share) include firmware needs some serious work - bugs get annoying but do not inhibit use, some features are advertised but are not functional yet (pending new firmware updates); paint finish get smudges/finger prints easy; A7 model heavy/bulky (duh it's got a huge screen); drive failure, etc. Any physical issues (like drive failure) are remedied by archos.
My main issue with this "portable media tablet" is that it definitely needs a software update - it feels like Archos rushed to get the product out. Also, having a mini hard drive spinning while driving around on a bumpy road also tends to make me nervous (although it's only 'crashed' twice, both times the product was fine with a re-start); since it does not use flash-based memory, the greater capacity comes at a cost. The touch screen does get some getting used to (especially if you're used to the iTouch/iPhone), but it works well and is precise for the most part.
On a scale of 1 to 5, i give this player a 4 with the ability to become a 5 pending future firmware releases.
i have a 640 30g which is nice . this one has internet which is better ..... but it's a little pricey
wow. such as sweet deal. i really want this. thank you.
a few weeks ago there was a 30% off coupon for ebay and I didn't buy it. I could've gotten the 60 GB for $280 and 120 GB for $320. I am still kicking myself in the ass.
just buy it now, moron, it's the same deal. i just did. thanks, Ben.
Archos customer support is probably the worst I've ever dealt with. I'm a computer technician that deals with reps on a daily basis. It took me literally A FULL YEAR to receive a working 704. I've now received three different Archos replacements. They actually sent me back my original one with stripped out screws and physical damage. Then they replaced it with a dented one that failed within a week. The one I have now is also dented but seems to work. The best I could get for compensation was an extra 6 months worth of warranty. That was after a Better Business Bureau complaint and hours on the phone. DO NOT BUY!
For a few bucks more you can get a laptop.
