Get the MX-2 for only $1 more. It's better and it's non conductive.

OCZ FreeZe is also a good competitor to this - I personally have seen lower temps with it over AS5, but I'm sure performance varies from machine to machine.

#6 this is taken from the arctic silver website

    Quote:
(While much safer than electrically conductive silver and copper greases, Arctic Silver 5 should be kept away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. While it is not electrically conductive, the compound is very slightly capacitive and could potentially cause problems if it bridges two close-proximity electrical paths.)

I have tried this and normal thermal paste, switching back and forth ten times to test the difference. I never saw any lower temperatures with this vs normal thermal grease.

i wouldn't recommend buying from yesbuy.net, I've ordered the mx-2 a few weeks ago and it took them 10 days to ship the item. Get it from someplace else if you want to get it in less than 2 weeks

#9 Are you sure you applied it correctly... you don't use a lot at all. And yes you do have to wait for a burn in period.

#13 I've had the same tube for 2-3 years.... I used it yesterday and it is perfectly fine still lol.

AS5 does not wear out in the tube, maybe you were thinking of the AS epoxy which does shelf rot in about a year. You can extend it's life a bit by sealing each tube in a separate airtight baggie (squeezing out excess air) and putting it in the refrigerator.

The difference in any fair quality grease is very small if each are properly applied, it's really not worth the bother to get anything special except to get something with a synthetic instead of silicone oil base to it so that it is less likely to separate out the solids. That's the main drawback to plain generic white grease, especially on open core flipchips where the heat density is high enough to accelerate the process. I've had to remove heatsink and reapply grease after Athlon XPs had ran fine for 2 or 3 years then started getting too hot, for example. Removing the 'sink you could see the compound had dried up and left the 'sink partially elevated on little islands of crusty compound.

#6 & #8 must have majored in poetry. Electrically non-conductive means electrically non-conductive. There's not an isolating substance that does not have a capacitive potential.

Whatever use this on your northbridge and southbridge if you want just be very careful. Also, MX-2 is Non-Capacitive.

Yes, I wated for the burn in period. Took me a year to complete the testing. The burn in period lowered it 2 degrees, which was the same as the thermal paste. Yes, I only used a small amount like a bb or pice of rice as they recommend.

Some substances are certainly more capacitive than others, including AS. It should not be used in applications where there is any chance of it making contact with pins or pads that are very close together. Frankly I find AS more of a pain to clean off too, leaving a silvery haze unless you use a solvent to clean that off as a final step. Combining these two factors I use Arctic Alumina the most, bought a 14 gram tube and it's lasted quite a long time. The Alumina type is also very mildly abrasive so if you put a dab on a cloth and buff the mating surfaces it will polish them down slightly which can't be bad for improving conductivity.
