I'm trying to figure out if the unfamilier word "cindlues" can tell me why a seemingly complete system is being referred to as "bare bones". I'm sconfued.

These usually come without an OS, and that's apparently "bare"

The same item on Newegg for $377 after rebate.

And I think this is called a bare bones more because it is one option package in a lineup of the same computer all with varying levels of completion.

These are the newer dual core atoms with the ION GPU. Lower power usage but with enough capacity to play bloated silverlight Hulu and NetfLix. Good for an HTPC.

You can build a much more capable HTPC for $400, it just won't be as small. I don't see much point to the 320GB HDD though, given the size limit you probably want a fileserver for addt'l capacity too which adds to total cost, and if you're doing that you might as well have a SSD in the HTPC instead, or just forget both options and piece together a kit with a larger HDD(s) in the first place.

IMO, Atom on a desktop system is a total fail unless it's only a fileserver/etc which has minimal load on the CPU. ION doesn't make up the difference for a HTPC, it can't play all HD formats and it won't be playing new formats as they come along, let alone the idea that some day we'll have even higher resolution than 1080P. I suppose you could downsample and convert everything that won't play but who really wants to have to do that?
