Got one combo deal with 25disks
buyer's remorse: i wish newegg would have had the lite-on ihbs112 available for $55 yesterday as i would have bought it instead of this. yeah, this could potentially be $15 cheaper, but it's a bit of a gamble with a $35 (~50%) rebate.
supposedly this is a rebadged ihbs112, except the specs aren't exactly the same (as listed on newegg), the liteon has more and slightly better reviews, and the liteon has firmware updates (where it's doubtful this asus will get any as it hasn't received any yet). it's supposed that you can cross-flash this to be a ihbs112, but not guaranteed.
why does it feel like it's 2005 all over again with hit-or-miss burner-media combinations and reliance on firmware updates (eg media x works well with burner y, but not with burner z, unless you've flashed with firmware w)?
i passed on the combo deals because none of them were that attractive (no free shipping and low-end media, but some people are reporting success with them with various burners) and instead got the tdk 50 disc spindle for $30. the verbatim discs priced like that are lth (low-to-high) and are a big let-down compared to regular verbatims (including with this burner), but i'm hoping the tdks aren't.
canadian baconbate - no thanks
I have a couple of these burners. They seem to work OK for me... Asus has came though with rebates for me in the past. This deal has free shipping. Come on #3, live a little dangerously...
There isn't any "gamble" with a rebate purchase from Newegg. If you end up having problems with the rebate you can contact Newegg customer support and they'll give you a store credit for the rebate amount. Not to mention that rebates are a lot more reliable than in the past. I've done about $150 worth of computer part rebates in the past 3 months and I've gotten them all.
