Newegg has the Asus Eee Box B202 Nettop Desktop PC (EBXB202-BLK-E0037) for $220 - $30 rebate [Exp 3/31] = $190 with free shipping. Since the Eee Box only requires around 20 watts of power, your carbon footprint is reduced by 90% compared to a standard PC. [Compare]

And your performance gets reduced by the same amount.

90% reduction? 20 watts? Most desktop computers use about 100W, unless you've got a screaming gaming rig. Even then the power usage scales back when you're not actively using the computer.

$200 for these things is ridiculous considering they're 5 times slower than a normal computer that costs $300. I guess they might be handy if you have an extreme lack of space.

If I use 100% renewable energy, say I am 100% solar power, then it does not reduce my carbon footprint at all.

And it does not reduce my carbon footprint 80% unless that is the only device I use that runs off energy produced by fossil fuels. It says "YOUR" carbon footprint which is the sum total of ALL carbon emmitted. So if you drive a car, use electric lights, have an oil heater, then this device would reduce your (as in total) carbon footprint about .001%

Every little bit helps, but honesty in advertising and honesty in self evaluation allow you to achieve real results.

This device will allow you to reduce the carbon footprint of ONE computer by 80% (on average, but you not every computer)if that computer is run off energy created by fossil fuels.

I guarantee your water heater, house air conditioning, home lighting, refrigerator/ freezer, and car use enough cabon emitting fuel that you will have had nominal impact on your carbon footprint.

While drinking a diet coke while eating a Big Mac and chocolate cake will reduce your total caloric intake, it is a tiny tiny step toward addressing the real issue. If you are already eating broccoli and skinless chicken, then switching to diet coke from regular coke will have a much bigger impact.

      Why buy this?

For $200 you can get an Acer Rivo1600. It has ION, comes with XP, HDMI-only output, and is a snap to upgrade from the 1GB it comes with to 2-4GB total. It is also quick and easy to upgrade XP to Win7 if you should so desire.

For basic computing and Mediacenter roles it is just fine. But don't even think about trying to install DragonAge or Crysis.

I don't get the digging on the performance of these things.

Yes, they're slower than regular PCs. However, my Zotac 1.6ghz Atom x2 is actually pretty decent for most average tasks that a household asks of it. Of course you need something faster for gaming, but it browses the internet, does email, word processing, etc. just fine. Pick up an ION chipset version and you'll have hardware-accelerated flash, capable of 1080p video, and it all comes in a package small enough to bolt to the back of your monitor.

It's not about dollar-per-megahertz. It's about a system that performs perfectly well for daily tasks while being tiny, low noise, low power consumption and inexpensive.

I would consider one of these bolted to the back of a monitor to be substantially better than one of the all-in-one systems: at least you can use the monitor when the computer is outdated.

The production run of EEE's probably reduces the average per-system carbon footprint of systems integrating Asus motherboards by 90%.

Whoa, #4 had few words to say on his mind. No, this thing sounds terrible even for mundane tasks. You can find an ebook that can satisfy such requirements with a screen to boot.
