win 7 starter?! lol need at least 2gb ram and faster cpu. my atom 280 struggles with w7 ultimate tiny edition. 2gb ram, o/c 1909mhz. i'm thinking switching back to xp lite or tiny because of lag.

Or switch to eeebuntu #2. You don't need Windows unless you require some specific software that will only run under Windows. For most typical apps (browsers, email, drawing, IM, bittorrent, media player, etc.) you might as well run something that's fast, free, and simple.

#4, ubuntu will run perfectly on that old machine. I've installed another brew of ubuntu, called xubuntu on an old ibook g4 and it had all the drivers, including the wireless card. You will just have to look around if the drivers are not auto-detected. There are generic drivers that will run most any hardware.

Agree. But I would not load eeebuntu on that HP. eeebuntu is just Ubuntu customized for the Asus eeePC series. So it's been tuned specifically for those machines. For any other machine, I'd go with straight Ubuntu or find another flavor such as what #5 is using.

You'll find that Ubuntu does everything you need on a netbook, and does it faster than Windows. The only downside is that it can sometimes get a little techie if something doesn't work right. But that's better than sucking it up and living with with the bugs, security holes, and flaws like you have to with Windows.
