Good concept, but too expensive compared to the $199 machine originally proposed. Wait for the next generation.
price will drop.
Just a matter of time
SDD is great!!! 4GB just doesn't cut it.
You can get a new low end laptop for that price.
A gig or two of RAM might have made the price worth while, but at 512 it just not worth it.
Price probably will not drop until the price of SSDs drop. Shockproof is a nice touch though.
Hard to find specific specs. The picture seems to show a phone modem jack on the side, as well as a USB port, but the minimal spec list (ad copy) doesn't mention this. Would be PERFECT for my Mom - she needs a laptop-type thing for short travels/vacations to surf & get email - no Excel, no Word, none of that.
Anyone know if this has a modem jack & USB port?
ralph, it has 3 USB ports, ethernet & wireless, but the modem is plugged up with a dummy plug (at least on mine).
The high end model has an 8GB drive and 1GB of RAM...
Better off going for a lower end laptop for that price.
You can get a lower end Acer model for around $350, which a lot better than this little thing.
so what is this good for?
This is great for traveling and you aren't using it as your primary laptop in the office/home. I had pre-ordered before the release but realized that this is the first gen. I bailed on it realizing that I was not getting much for $400. I want one with a bigger HD and make sure this thing has been tested like crazy before dumping $400 on this. If it was $200 then I'll get it for sure.
If you want the complete specs and components, TweakTown got one of these and took it apart. Link: http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/1213/asus_eee_pc_exclusive_inside_look/index.html%20
I'd have to say, though, that this is not a good deal. Just watch the ads. I've seen normal laptops for this much and less on sale at places like Office Depot or Office Max, and that's with a much faster CPU, 1GB of faster RAM, and far more hard drive space(although not SSD). I bet on black friday there will be multiple laptops on sale that will blow this one out of the water.
go to walmart and get that acer laptop for $350.
Hey people posting just to rack up posts, this is NOT a replacement for a 7lbs $350 laptop. This actually isn't a good deal because I believe they said this model would be $200 and the 1gb/8gb would be $400. This is a great entry level pc/secondary computer for people who don't do much with computers or need something small and fast to do the basics
get a laptop. it's cheaper, bigger, and more useful. even a low end laptop can do plenty with mame.
If one more person suggests getting a $350 laptop instead of this, I swear I am going to stop trying to increase my post count.
This is a replacement for a $750 - $1000 ultralight, if all you want is email, surfing and a little word processing, etc. That make it a better deal that the 7 lb lappies some are recommending. That said, I would wait for the next gen - more storage and cheaper.
This is not a deal. My $350 one from WM is lots better and recommend to wait for BF...
