As another user said, this is NOT a laptop replacement. This weighs 2 pounds. It's good for light surfing, checking your email. You can throw it in a bag and go. It's not for playing games, holding your music, or doing heavy-duty graphics work.

Yes, it was initially announced at $200, but the dollar is tanking and LCD/flash memory prices are up, so there you go.

#21, got your point, but $400 for light surfing and chking email is just too much. nowaday, ppl can use cell phone, pda, ... even nds or psp taking care of those light stuffs. isn't it!?

    #18 do you promised?

But yes, $400 for an internet appliance does seem steep.

If you're going to the coffee shop, yeah... it's probably too much. But if you travel a lot, weight starts to matter. Definitely the iphone/itouch/blackberry/ etc all compete with it, so it just comes down to personal preference.

I am looking to get an Asus laptop, why all those seem to be so much more expensive compared to other brands?

why need this when you can get a laptop with this price? Of course it will not be a high end one, but I'm sure it be way more functional than this!

Everyone please stop comparing this to regular laptops, this is an ULTRA PORTABLE. This laptop weights under 2lbs that other similarly priced is probable 3x heavier and 3x larger. This laptop is slightly larger than a DVD case. If you compare it to ULTRA PORTABLES its at minimum 1/3 of their normal costs. It runs a custom linux distro but XP can be installed on it if you want. The linux distro runs really well and is more than capable of playing xvid movies. I want this laptop because I want something really small the surf the web on, and maybe work on a paper a bit outside my dorm. At my dorm I have a quad core PC so I don't need a beefy laptop.
Here are some pictures of its size:

    from #14's link:

[/i]3x USB ports, Realtek sound chip (ALC6628) giving 5.1-channel High Definition sound, Built-in stereo speakers, MMC(plus)/SD(HC) card reader, Microphone, Keyboard, Mouse pad, 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, V.92 56K modem and several other functions such as the mini PCI-E slots which support the WiFi card. There is also a vacant mini PCI-E port for future expansion options and it is easily accessible through a secured hatch at the bottom of the Eee PC.[/i]

It is something between a PDA and a laptop. But with the specs, it just cannot replace either. If this is selling for $199 than I'll go for it. Overpriced at $400.

ralph, it has 3 USB ports, ethernet & wireless, but the modem is plugged up with a dummy plug (at least on mine).

You can also hook up an external monitor. Some models include an internal modem, according to the website below.

Since it's running Linux, it might be bearable, but really, it's too bad there's no Mac this small. .92 kg!
