Newegg has the ASUS EN8400GS Silent/P/512M GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 64-bit DDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card for $33 - $13 rebate [Exp 2/28] = $20 with free shipping. Super silent operation due to its fanless design. [Compare]

Too expensive before and after rebate. If you don't care about that, though, then this is a pretty good card for a linux-based XBMC or MythTV PC. This is a G98-core card and supports VDPAU "feature-set B" in linux:

Bought one last month with essentially the same deal. I modded it for PCIe X1 (as seen on my web site - InvisibleRobot) for use as a second video card for additional monitors.

Today I ordered a second to replace the primary PCIe X16 video card, so that both cards will be silent. Nice card if you want a cheap, silent, low-power-consumption card to drive a couple monitors for non-3D work.

Hey - how is HDMI over a DVI port? Looking for a good linux card for DVDs primarily, hopefully someday HD Intarweb TV stuff (is ESPN360 in HD? dubious).

#3, HDMI video over a DVI port (using an adapter, of course) is no different than using a native HDMI port on a video card.

HDMI audio is a different story, though. You'll need both a video card and a compatible DVI-to-HDMI adapter that supports audio-over-HDMI. This card doesn't have built-on audio (you need a Geforce 210 or later, or an ATI 2400 or later, for that), and it also doesn't have the header pins that allow you to connect a digital audio source from a sound card or from your m0therboard's built-on digital audio output.

If you look at the pictures of this video card at NewEgg's site, you'll see a 2-pin header onboard. This is a fan header and not a digital-audio input.

I don't believe the DVI port is capable of carrying sound over it like some are able to.

If you're looking for a good card just to use for DVD's or general HDTV broadcasts, you'd be fine with the lowest end card that does some pretty good quality.

Not sure of ATI's linux support, but their low-end cards would be more than suitable for that and most of the newer ones carry bitstreaming capabilities. If you want VDPAU with Nvidia, you'd have two low-cost options.

If you don't mind running your sound cable to the video card to have it carry sound via HDMI, an 8400 gs for $32: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814261043

Or get a GT 220/240 if you'd rather not mess with that: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143210 ($50 after MIR)
    burp... #4 beat me.

Well, 2 cents... For Lunix suppport and Audio over the HDMI cable that Palit 8400GS is an option. I would say just move up to the GT210, which are plentiful for $25-30 -AR and dosen't need the the sound cable like GT220/240's. Down side not many passive single slot like this GS on the cheap.

I thought that the Geforce 210 didn't have built-on audio, but apparently it does.
