Given that I have a PS3, I'm kind of settled on the idea of using the extender/player to wirelessly stream content from the PC--rather than install a hard drive on the player itself.

So I was assuming that's what the Ethernet port on the O!Play allows...live connection to a PC, and streaming through the player. But the spec quote below gets me thinking the O!Play can ONLY play files that are stored ON IT, that is, the Ethernet route is for MOVING files on to the player, which can then be played:

"Easy access to content in network
Users do not have to carry the physical storage from study room to living room. HD content stream from PC or NAS to the Media Player for easy file management."

no you can create a shortcut to your PC and stream off the machine. There's no need to move files.

the ethernet port is to connect the player to your network. It is not wireless. You can purchase a wireless access point to connect to your router, and hook this player directly into the AP.

If you want to get rid of that and just use your PS3 to stream stuff like Hulu, Youtube, and Netflix, get the PlayOn software. Works great, got it for $20.

#3 Using Tversity right now, but doesn't work with Netflix. How is the quality of PlayOn with on-demand movies from Netflix?

Another alternative is PS3 Media Server. In my opinion, it's much better than TVersity and much easier to set up.

I don't know about Netflix, though. I don't use them...

Stay away from this if you can.

Two of my friends bought it and returned it within 24hrs.

Too many freezes and heating issues

PlayOn's Netflix isn't great, a little jumpy although I did manage to watch all of Hancarrot on it. Quality with Hulu though is EXCELLENT. Almost like watching regular TV. Can also do Amazon videos now that I remember.

Don't know if it works better than Tversity but it certainly works $20 well enough.
