This router is amazing! 480Mhz, 32MB ROM, 128MB RAM, Gigabit LAN. I have DD-WRT loaded on it. I have absolutely no complaints. I have a 2TB drive hooked up to the USB and am going to be able to sell my old 500GB NAS Drive to pay for this purchase. I am only getting about 8MB throughput on my 2TB drive in this setup...but I only use it for backup so it is perfect for my needs.
This router replaced an ASUS WL-500GP, which replaced a buffalo router I had DD-WRT on also.
I am by no means proficient at Linux. I am just following the directions step by step. To initially flash it, it is as simple as just logging into the web gui and telling it to upgrade the firmware with the right .trx file. After that you are opens source!
The biggest downside is the lack of sleep as I read through all the forums/Wiki information. But that is also an upside as I have greatly expanded my Linux knowledge in the process.
lazyman, i have been looking at this router for a while and i see the price going down. I have a WHR-G300N and I am not too thrilled with it. I added external high DB antenna's, but still it is a cheap low end router that people put DD-WRT on.
I may pull the trigger on this.
I was looking at the BUFFALO WZR-HP-G300NH and even though dd-wrt came out with a version for the "A0 A3" firmware I wanted the US "A0 D0" but it's a crap shoot what version you will get and the ...egg is supposedly shipping "A0 A3".
I currently have a ASUS WL-500GP w/ DD-WRT and have been happy with it so when I saw the Asus RT-N16 for $78 it made my decision easy. Now I have to decide whether to go with DD-WRT or Tomato....leaning towards Tomato.
I pulled the trigger on this tonight.
good router, from all i read on dd-wrt forum and on the baconeals post i found
Just installed TomatoUsb without a hitch.
Kernel 2.6 (experimental) for MIPSR2 ("Ext" version)

Followed this guide: http://patricksheedy.net/blog/simple-tomato-firmware-install-on-asus-rt-n16-router/
* I'd add step 3.5) to this guide: Reset factory firmware to default settings prior to upgrading the firmware. . You need to do a HARD RESET first (while pressing WPS button, plug the power to the router, you will see blinking PWR LED. After a while everything will be settled down... and defaults will be restored)-Note: You can do it also in the web interface of Asus firmware (restore to default settings or something similar).
