Amazon has the Autel MaxiScan MS300 OBD-II Code Reader for $20 with free shipping on $25+. Compatible with 1996 and later OBD II-compliant vehicles, reads and displays Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Now you'll know whether you need a new engine or you're just low on wiper fluid.
i purchased this a couple of years ago when my auto had emission trouble. while it gave an emission code, it didnt indicate exactly which part was faulty. turned out to be the pressure sensor on top of the fuel pump.
Just bought one of these a few week ago for a couple of bucks more. Seems to work just fine, reads and clears codes. Very small device so it's easy to keep in you glovebox/armrest.
