Amazon has the Autel MaxiScan MS300 OBD-II Code Reader for $21 with free shipping on $25+. Compatible with 1996 and later OBD II-compliant vehicles, reads and displays Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Now you'll know whether you need a new engine or you're just low on wiper fluid.
At this low price it makes you wonder sometimes, why they don't just build this functionality into the car in the first place. I'd much rather the cost go to that than some of the things bundled today.
buy the usb version on ebay and hook it up to your laptop, or bluetooth that can hook up to a smartphone....then get the software...plus this will not directly tell you that you need a new engine or that your low on wiper fluid
