Amazon has the Autel MaxiScan MS300 OBD-II Code Reader for $21 with free shipping on $25+. Compatible with 1996 and later OBD II-compliant vehicles, reads and displays Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Now you'll know whether you need a new engine or you're just low on wiper fluid.
I have this code reader and can speak that it works. Also, allows you to reset the SES light, read the engine VIN#, etc.
Remember that by just resetting the SES light you cannot pass an inspection as the vehicle will not have enough operation time on the onboard computer.
In maine they just need to see the dash light off. My cheap code reader has enabled me to put off changing the knock sensor in the woman's car for years! I actually erase the code in the parking lot of the garage that does the stickers.
Any recommendations for a bluettoth capable unit that syncs with a smart phone? One of my previous coworkers had a unit such as this. It was cool - you can actually sees output charts of a number of sensors within the car during operation.

Works good. Recommended.
