Amazon has the Autel MaxiScan MS300 OBD-II Code Reader for $22 with free shipping on $25. Compatible with 1996 and later OBD II-compliant vehicles, reads and displays Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Now you'll know whether you need a new engine or you're just low on wiper fluid.
was there another change in the ODB-II specs within the last few years? My 2007 cars are no longer compatible with the code reader taht i bought in like 2005.
There was an upgrade to a system called CAN (Controller Area Network). Before, Ford used one system (PWM), GM another (VPW) and Chrysler and "imports", a third system (ISO). But some "imports" like Isuzu used VPW. All used the same connector but different pins. Scantools usually decoded all three.
The upgrade to CAN included higher bit rates and better noise immunity, still using the same connector. Some manufacturers went to CAN before the required date (which I don't recall).
in for one, has good reviews on amazon
Looks like a good deal. I'd pick one up if I hadn't gotten one a few months ago for about $10 more.

Hope this helps,

Save me one trip to the dealer and it pays for itself.
