USB TV is very convenient for notebook computers if all you want to do is watch some TV. Note that these devices tend to get (very?) hot and that does not bode well for operational longevity.

You'll have the same problems as standard TV if you are in a weak reception area. USB TVs have connect-in antennas that may require critical placement to receive steady pictures in weaker or easily blocked signal locations.

Included software can be a problem. Always create Windows restore points before installation (for subsequent clean removal) in case you must uninstall the software for upgrades ... or downgrades! Compatibility is always problematical with these devices -- ongoing development & support is a must (check the manufacturer's forums or Google-search for systemic problems)! For example, some Pinnacle System software improves compatibility in newer upgrades but also breaks some software functions.

Capturing is a another matter. It must be due to limited electronics or design techniques that captured video has problems (speaking of Pinnacle Systems again) with interlacing smear (part of a field "shows through" on the alternate field) and non-standards stream data (where it may be improperly identified on playback with resulting mis-play). For example:

This is not obvious on "progressive" displays like computer screens. However, for good quality and accurate capturing and archiving of video, use plug-in capture cards (from companies with good hardware & software reputations from actual users).

This works well with clear qam as well. I set this up with Vista Media Center as a test a while back when MS released the TVPack for QAM support. It worked well with some fiddling... (yes I am a fiddler)

Are there other solutions for laptop TV viewing? Why would you need this?
