Ok doubters time for lesson. The point of this isn't to "permanently" install a drive in an external enclosure. The usage model for this device essentially turns hard drives into big removable media. One huge gigantic hard floppy. Or a thick metallic DVD. With the incredible densities of HDs, you'd be hard pressed to find removable media equaling a 1 TB drive (that's over 200 DVD-R's). And arguably more reliable than most removable media.

Useful thing if you have some of the old HDDs and want to get data from them without opening your computer. Works well.
@1 - very
@2 - rodeo cowboy
@3 - see above
@8 - that's correct
@11 - see #4
@13 - they're fine
@14 - it's got to be.
@18 - see #17
@19 - no
@20 - it's similar
@23 - you seem to know it all lol
nice. thanks for the link Oio
#19 No, cant really exist because of placement of the connectors, the cable versions have to have different sides, one for IDE, one for SATA. a Dock doesnt have that flexibility.
interesting. I guess i will be stuffing my pocket with a 1 TB SATA HDD instead of a 8 GB USB drive.
Sounds like a good deal with the Seagate ST31000340AS 1TB SATA HDD for $100 at ZipZoomFly.com.
I've been wanting to get one of these, but I have so many IDE drives... are there any that works for both IDE and SATA?
don't think so
This looks like an awesome replacement for an external drive. Can anyone comment on the performance?
I also have the BlackX and it works great. It is very convenient and easy to use. I have had to swap out hd's several times. I clone my system drive to a drive in the BlackX and update it periodically. My system HD crashed and I just pulled the backup out of the BlackX and put it in the computer. It does not support IDE, however.
i've never seen such a thing. weird wild stuff
I'm with #19. I'd buy this if it could also read IDE because I have half a dozen IDE drives that would be great to get quick access to.
These docking stations are great for having many different backup drives, they give better cooling than a cable version and have better protection against the drive falling off the desk.
Hey number 19 I have one that works with IDE and SATA. I believe it is from Thermaltake, bought for around 20 bucks. It just had an adapter piece.
This looks awesome. I'm getting one.
Yeah, if there was one that would take IDE and SATA that would be better - I've got several of each kind laying around.

Played with these - no better than the cheaper cable versions. Slightly more safe since things are mounted in plastic, but also a waste of space for the infrequency of use.
I ended up sticking with the simpler cable versions.
