This one looks like it got better tech but I read that Amzn got a big ol' fat library. I got my hands on a Kindle recently. It's a gift for the GF. I gotta say, it's not something I would want, but it's pretty cool tech. You can Email books to yourself and never even attach the thing. You can get lots of free content for it too. The display is pretty damned bright as well. Not a bad gadget for people who love to read.

As for me, I do mobibook on my blackberry and it works fine as wine.

Have a couple and its great. Firmware 1.2 just came out that helps with performance somewhat. The fact that has a free lifetime 3g and that its already been rooted (software mod now available) and can run thousands of android apps (eg browser, pandora, etc) makes this a winner. Plus it already has native support for the epub format, something the Kindle doesn't have (only proprietary and pdf).

    Check out http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/12/17/the-nook-gets-pandora-web-browser-facebook-apps/ and http://nookdevs.com/Main_Page.

Ummmm. Wait to buy. Even with the new firmware there are some interface and speed issues. Word is that apple management is going to be "nimble" on the price of the iPad if it doesn't sell well upon release. Yes, e-ink is easier on the eyes over long term reading than an LCD display, but the iPad brings a lot more function to the table. I would also imagine that both amazon and B&N are going to get a lot more competitive on pricing if the iPad does sell well and eats into their market. Either way, it's a win/win for consumers.

The A**hole to the left plans to raise the price of e-books across the board so he can cut the price of his Enlarged Touch. He's trying to lure publishers to abandoned Amazon for his iBooks. If Amazon doesn't agree to higher prices on e-books he telling them to leave and come over to Apple where they can get additional 50%++ markup over Amazon's $9.99. I think a protest of Apple is in order. Start by not buying the iPad....

    Competition isn't always good.

    #6,

    Book publishers need $, too.

Of course, I'm probably going to get a kindle, but I am waiting for a price drop on the kindle 2/DX, or on the next generation kindle.

#7, could you have #5 elaborate on what he means, precisely, by "Enlarged Touch"?

#7, see spec sheet at http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/compare/. Nook has built in 3g connectivity from AT&T and wifi. Of course, the 3g was never meant to be utilized beyond the paltry MBs required for downloading ebooks, but its there nonetheless and tethering could be a reality but for the fact that the carrier would probably eventually block out your mac or what have you. Nonetheless, an internet browser over wifi with no eyestrain may not be terrible.

Competition IS good. I don't see myself getting an iPad. The Skiff reader looks nice (I like things big...) but not enough details yet to decide...

I got one for the wife and she loves it! I love it because it means no more actual books laying around and trying to find somewhere to put all of them, she has hundreds and has read them all and continues to reread them. i just slapped a 8GB microsd in it and its good to go! ill have to look into the software mods though.
