Sounds good, but kind expensive.
Way too expensive-won't any wifi phone work with Skype?
I've used mine in Europe and the Caribbean. Does what it says and lets you call for free or cheap relatively conveniently. WiFi is pretty prevalent these days.
You can actually buy one of these, set up your asterisk (open source pbx software) at home, and use your home phone from anywhere you get internet over wifi. Or you can use your vonage or any other voip account directly as well as receive calls from your usual phone numbers.
Although I find it hard to find free wifi hotspots when I am traveling, using this you wouldn't need to carry your laptop for voip calls.
Moreover you need to add a wifi connection and bother with getting signal every time you want to use it. I guess it makes using this phone really inconvenient versus the seamless handover with cellphones.
I don't see people using this unless they are a computer or gadget geek.
Not after a long time though these phones will be mainstream when WiMAX comes into our everyday lives.
1) Not every Wifi phone would work with Skype, since Skype does not use SIP, which is the standard most Wi-Fi phones use, as do most IP PBX software.
2) I'm not sure this phone would work with Asterisk (see above), at least without purchasing some 3rd party software/adapters...
Do your homework before buying this. Last summer I looked around before buying a Philips VOIP phone for my college-freshman daughter. The Philips phone is a handset that works with a dedicated base station that in turn is connected with an ethernet cable. There is an ethernet port in her dorm room, so she hooks directly to that, and the phone works great. Unfortunately, Philips subsequently discontinued the phone. I guess it's hard to make money in VOIP.
I seem to recall reading numerous reports on this phone on places like Newegg and Amazon that said the phone was of limited utility and that it had issues.
