We have had a Brother laser printer since 1998. Can't seem to wear the thing out so I can get a new one. We paid $250 for it then, but they were new and wonderful, and it has turned out to be worth the exorbitant price.
I got this for $100 a couple months back at Best Buy. Never got the wireless to work, but it's a great printer nonetheless.
Great little printer. If you've got experience with wireless networking as well as setting up IP printers, it's not a big deal to configure as a wireless network printer. Only caveat is that the "starter" cartridge doesn't last very long (only got 366 pages off of one where I work, rated for 1,000.) A new "high-yield" cartridge will set you back nearly $50.
Agreed with #3 that this is a nice printer. I bought it a few months ago in a package deal that included paper and an extra "high yield" cartridge. I got a little more than 500 pages from the included "starter" cartridge and I think that my print jobs probably use more ink per page than average, so no complaints from me about the life of the "starter" cartridge. I've only recently had to replace the "starter" cartridge with the "high yield" cartridge.
I do a LOT of duplex printing, and find that the manual duplex option of the HL-2170W works well. When you select duplex printing and send the job, Brother's printer driver launches a wizard that walks you through the process. It has you print the first side, and then pauses and prompts you reinsert the paper into the tray. You then click a dialog button to continue the job and print the other side of the pages. The only negative about the manual duplex option is that you have to click the dialog on the PC instead of pushing a button on the printer to continue the duplex print job.
For me, setting up the wireless was easy. I used the printer's built-in web interface instead of Brother's software configuration utility. I first connected the printer via ethernet to my wired network and let the printer get an IP address via DHCP. I checked the DHCP leases in my router to see what address was assigned to the printer and used my web browser to connect to that address. I then configured the printer's wireless settings (including giving the wireless a static IP address), disconnected the ethernet from my wired network, and then used my web browser to connect to the IP address that I assigned to the printer's wireless interface. That all worked without problems, so I set up the printer on my many PCs and have been printing with no trouble. I'm printing to the HL-2170W ... [Truncated]
im glad its gotten good reviews ..looking for a laser printer preferably one that can print in black n color!!
Works fine with Linux driver downloaded from brother. I picked it up for $70 on sale at OfficeMax, was last one in stock for that brick and mortar. Am happy with it, wish the duplexing was not manual, otherwise, no complaints.
