I had a Buffalo 1TB usb 2.0 external drive that had failed within 6 months. The wait to get a RMA was over 1.5 hours. I have called around 1 pm T (Pacific Standard Time). I was compensated with a refurbished model which had a very loud fan noise to it. I would not buy Buffalo's products. I like Western Digital because they tend to give you a brand new replacement. Buffalo's is a "no no" for it.

WD must have changed. Last time one of their drives failed on me, I received a refurbished one as well.

Most companies now send refurbs as warranty replacements if they have any lying around.

WD I occasionally get refurbs on replacement drives, sometime equal capacity new drives, or even new higher capacity new drives. Send in a 250GB get a new 500GB back. Buffalo uses Seagate, another strike against this company.
