So I've been hearing that wireless-N isn't really worth it unless the router is 5Ghz, to maximize the speed. True? Anyone know? I'm happy with the ol' WRT54GL but I'm N-curious.
If you are going to upgrade you will be best served with simultaneous dual band N, so the router can send both 2.4 and 5.0 at the same time.
I bought this instead last year for $28. free shipping, no tax.

I have 2 hard wired devices and 4 wireless (1 G, 3 N) connected to it.
No issues at all. Great range, 300 mbps (most of the time)
...and the easiest setup of any router I have ever used.
It just hangs on my wall doing its job.
This was a noticeably faster router than my dlink n150. Very easy setup, good range, and a bullet proof signal - no drops.
No point in running Wireless N unless your router & device support 5Ghz.
2.4 gives you greater strength and speed. 5Ghz if for when your 2.4 band has a lot of interference on it. It doesn't perform as well in a clean direct comparison.
I get good performance with both bands, but as #7 indicated I get greater speed for longer range on 4 I have one router providing a 802.11b/g signal on one channel and another providing 300Mbps N coverage on a different channel so they don't interfere, then 5Ghz N channel as well. Works well.
Nothing wrong with 2.4ghz only N routers. I have a netgear single channel and my laptop and get real world SMB transfers of about 80-90mbps from two rooms over.
5ghz can be a little tricky. It doesn't penetrate as well thus shorter range on that channel.
Not fond of the buffalo brand. I believe you can put DDWRT on this one though.
Thanks for the info!
