- More charge and discharge cycles compared to NiMH or especially Li-Ion. You could go with something more exotic like LiFePO4, but then capacity drops relative to Li-Ion but the higher cost remains.
- Higher low temperature performance than NiMH
- Longer working life in # of years than NiMH or especially Li-Ion.
- No risk of severe (complete circuit shutdown or fire) damage from overdischarge or overcharge as with Li-Ion
- Less expensive cells and less expensive charging circuit.
The only real downside to NiCd in this application is the environmental disposal issues. Recycle them at end of life if it's a concern. Otherwise it's not a portable device so power density or weight reduction don't matter, only that the battery pack have enough capacity to last until it can recharge again.
