Wonderful portrait lens.However this lens has been at this price for a while and still not sold out yet. Seems everybody lean more to buy zoom lens instead....

Is this not so good for crop cameras? I'd probably have to be pretty far away to take portraits.

Well, the conventional focal length range for portraits (35mm film/full-frame) is 85mm to 135mm. The 85mm on a crop Canon body gives you the same view as a 136mm lens on a film SLR which is perfect for head shots.
The Canon 85mm f1.8 is an excellent lens -- very sharp with a narrow depth of field (note: focus on your subject's eyes so that they're very sharp) and amazing image quality plus fast USM focusing and full-time manual focus ( e, you can manually focus in auto-focus mode). Your photos will really POP! It also makes a nice sports lens. This lens can help bring out the full potential of your DSLR.
