great camera with excellent functionality. Pair it with a 18-55 is, 28-135 is, or one of the nice 17-50(55) third parties for a good walk around.

I had this for a few months as a backup before being replaced with a 40d, and never had a problem with it's visual quality.

#4 there is a comparison on DP review between the Nikon d200 and the canon 40d. If you were to go up to that price point the canon definately has some advantages. Although a camera is only as good as your lens collection and if you are a Nikon man then you are a Nikon man.

      #8, what is a DC?
I had this camera for more than a year, the first few hundreds pix looked not so good. But after learning & practicing, I'm very happy with the camera's performance now.

Seems like a great deal for someone's first digital SLR. #8, after reading many reviews, it seems like the vast majority of people are quite fond of this camera.

      DC is compact digital camera
DC gets better picture than DSLR just like RF gets better one than SLR.

The nice thing about the entry-level 8/10MP Canon Rebel XT[i] is that it's not severely crippled like the entry-level 6/10MP Nikon D40[x]. If it's Canon v. Nikon for your first dSLR, go Canon. Nikon is marketing the D40[x] product 3x over what Canon is the Rebel XT[i], hence why ever local camera shop is pushing it. If you're going to go Nikon, do not buy the D40[x].

Heck, a couple of months ago a local camera shop was passing out a camera contest flyer where you could win the 10MP D40x. I had my little $300 6MP Pentax K100D out and was shooting and he said "nevermind" and didn't bother to give me one because he knew the features of even the lowly K100D kicked its ass (especially with the $250 DA 16-45 f/4 lens I had on it).

I honestly cannot stress enough that while there are many different "entry-level" options out there, none are more crippled than the Nikon D40[x]. As such, the 8/10MP Canon Rebel XT[i] products make an excellent entry-level solution, as do the 6/10MP Pentax K100D/K10D, 10MP Sony A100, etc... For Nikon, you really need to go D80, possibly a used D50.

At 2-3x the cost, the new 12MP, matrix AF and 900Kpixel LCD featured Nikon D300 and Sony A700 products are outstanding and great upgrade paths. Pentax's rumored nexgen product will be announced in January and Canon will also have a similar competitor shortly as well.

If you pay about $549 at Circuit City, you can get the standard lens with it too. For most people "gifting" a camera, I think the majority of the consumers (e old people who walk into Best Buy and say, "Well, I'm looking for the best digital camera that does everything") are going to be stupidly happy with whatever awful lens and body they get as long as it looks like an SLR. For photographers, maybe this is a good deal if you plan to use a Tamron anyway. Nice to see a Canon DSLR dip under $500 though.

According to consumer reports the Canon Rebel XTi is below Olympus E-410 and Nikon D40x in over all score.

I would just save a bit more and go witht eh rebel XT, instead of XTi. Thats what I have and it works great. WHen I was researching what to buy I remember reading a lot of people dissappointed with the rebel XTi and downgrading to the rebel XT. I know some concerns were with the flash, can't remember what else.

I also looked at Nikons, if you arent at least going to get the D80 I would just buy one of the canon rebels. What I really wanted was teh Nikon D80, but I saved 200-300$ by going with the XT.
