anyone used this and have experience with one of the comparable Nikons (D40 or D50, etc)?
If you're in the market for one of these, I'd wait for the new model XSI: 12MP and live view display.
If you're in the market for one of these, I'd wait for the new model XSI: 12MP, faster Digic III chip and live view display.
Nice Camera
The new model is overrated. Anything XT or above is more than sufficient for pretty much any non-professional. 12MP with a kit lens hogs more memory but doesn't give a significantly better picture. Spend your extra money on better lenses.
#2, if you're using the display instead of the viewfinder to frame your photos then you should NOT be using a DSLR. Stick to a point a shoot. FACT!
NIKON baby
Actually some point and shoot users switch to DSLR because of bad shutter lag experience on the compacts. That's a hell of a lot of camera for $560, that's for sure.
I got this camera for the exact reason #8 mentioned. I have two kids and SLR is a must. I'm not an expert in camera nor have used any others to make any comparison but does it's job and been pretty happy with it. Only complaint I have is that the AF doesn't always focus on the face on the first try even though I center it right on the face. Don't know if it's my doing or the camera.
#9, go through menu, try center spot focus, or multi spot
(might be under a different label, but dig and test)
FYI, the XSI kit comes with a newer version of the 18-55 lens, slighty better optics and IS.

Is this a deal cause of the free shippping? i thought it was always about this price, or even a little better at Costco.
560 is a good price. but i'm sure it will drop after xsi is put on market on april. i have this one, and it works nice. but if u really want a good quality picture. but another lens, coz the kit lens doesnt give u a sharp image.
I have this XTi. To be honest, I wouldn't mine going for the XT instead. Cheaper for the same.
And of cause the 50mm lens is awesome for the price.
People "experience" "shutter lag" because they mash the button in one go and expect it to take a picture instantly. AF takes time, more so with a point & shoot.
The shutter button on all AF cameras is two stage. First stage activates AF and metering. Second stage trips the shutter.
The "lag" is due to the camera software saying that the image must be in focus before the shutter trips. If it didn't, all you button-mashers would be complaining that the AF doesn't work.

The Olympus e-510 is cheaper everyday and from what I have read around the web is a stellar camera and known to be the best bang for the buck in the 10mp class
Yeah, maybe you shouldn't believe everything you read around the web...
I just bought the e-510 recently. I was debating between the XTi and the e-510, but in the end settled for e-510 because of the built in image stabilization, even though Canon has better image quality at high ISO and has a larger sensor. It turned out to be a good choice for how much I ended up doing point and shoot. Canon might be a better choice for people who are less "beginner" when it comes to DSLR where as e-510 works for DSLR beginners who don't want to buy large lenses with built in IS.
I have a 35 mm Cannon Eos Elan with a couple of good autofocus lenses that I do not use anymore. Will the lenses work on this camera? They both say EF on them, if that is any help.
#19 They should. Same mount.
