Good camera, but the 18 - 55 mm kit lens is junk. You may want to check out the Nikon D40X. Th Nikon has a kit at costco that includes the 18 to 55mm and the 55 to 200mm lenses. To make the XTOI worth it you need to buy a couple lenses that will cost you $1000.
Costco has the Nikon D40X with 2 lenses and case for $849
Compared to the deal DELL had yesterday ($509 body only) this is a good deal for people on limited budget. Yes, the kit lens is not great but not bad for 70 bucks..
Considering that most retailers sell the D40 for about $30 less, this is a great buy. And the lens is quite decent, #1.
Don't be fooled by drastically lower prices from nooyawk. These guys will shorten your lifespan and you'll miss this deal waiting for them to stop f*cking with you.
Great price on this camera.
Can you get a battery grip for the D40x? I know the battery grip for the XTi makes it so much easier to hold, both vertically and horizontally.
I have to agree with #2. You can't rarely go wrong getting a lens for $70. If you're upgrading, then it's probably not worth it. In which case, you wouldn't be thinking about whether to buy it or not
It's a good camera. I'm sure you knew that already. Lenses ain't cheap though... If you're looking at getting into DSLR, look at the lens prices first.
Awesome deal people and the best camera ever!
I have the 8.0 mp model of this camera. Good camera, but they are still using the very same lens that came with my camera. I'd say buy the camera, ebay the lens, and get a worthwhile lens. That is what I did
I just purchased this camera. I customized it to take away the kit lens which got the price down to $509. I then applied the code which took the price down to $479 which is by far the cheapest I've seen this camera at a legit online store.
I bought a Nikon D40, with a 18-55mm DX lens and a 55-200mm DX VR lens for $589 shipped last week from Abes of Maine and am very happy with it. I highly recommend this setup. I know D40 only has 6mega pixels, but the picture quality is very good.
#9, that's interesting. Can you tell me why I should choose the D40 deal with less MP, at a higher price than this one? plus the crappy lenses you got that nobody wants?
#8 got it right, better spend the difference + some more for a better glass.
#10, in my opinion, MP isn't everything, it's the lens that makes the the difference in picture quality. Unless you are planning on making poster sized photos, I don't think many people can tell the difference between a 6 MP picture vs. a 10 MP picture. You are much better saving your money buying a quality lens, if you are planning on going into DSLR. Another reason why I went with Nikon is because I have an analog Nikon F2, circa 1978, with some really nice lens that I can use on my D40.
#10 is a nubcake. if you think that mp are the key to a better camera, go buy a 12mp point and shoot. and the duo of lenses he got are incredible for the price. now he has an effective reach from 27-300mm on a nice camera for less than $600, and the telephoto has VR. get a burp clue, not everyone is willing to/can spend loads of money on lenses and equipment.
I own this camera. So far I like it alot. Dozens of interesting features. The lens kit is fine for the average user. Great way to break into the digi SLR world. Nice price point, too. Can't go wrong with Canon (or Nikon for that matter).
I have this and got mine for around $700 back about 1 year ago. Anyway, everyone is right saying that it's all in the Lens. The kit lens is great for budget but it has zooming problem (at least for mine). The zooming is like 50/50. If U're lucky it'll zoom and produce a clear shot.
a good lens to replace the kit lens with is the canon 28-135mm ultrasonic with image stabilizer. I got this as a walk-around lens b.c it has a good range and decent zoom and the IS feature is nice. The difference in pic quality between the kit lens and the 28-135 is night and day. If I remember correctly, I got the lens at newegg for about 420.00. Pricey, but good lens and versatile. All told, you can get the camera and a really good lens for close to a grand and thats not too bad.
dpreview.com is a great place to read reviews on all digital cameras - real photo nerds over there - liked the XTi but said it was a predictable new model and that while still very very good it has given nikon and sony a chance to catch up with their similar models.
wait #3 what retailers are selling the D40 for $30 less than this camera - i thought the D40 was a $1200-ish body?
Lenses mean more than MPixels. think about it.
dpreview isn't impressed with the kit lenses.
The Oly E510 though looks like a great alternative, 2 kit lenses that rated very well and about $675 for the whole thing from reputable places.
you're thinking canon 40d, they're talking about the nikon d40.
yes i was confusing the D40 and 40D - i wonder if that was someones genius marketing plan?
