The lens you guys really want for this is the soon to be released Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. The IS will add a few stops to spare. It's gonna coat around $200. This is my next lens.
The f1.8 50 is OK. I have the 1.4 and it makes some darn nice blurry backgrounds. The 1.6 conversion makes the 50mm into sort-of an 80mm lens through crop, but I am still debating if it actually too short to produce the nice portrait effects made by an 85mm, 100mm, or 105mm.
