Walmart has the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM "L" Series Macro Lens for $879 with free in-store pickup or $4 to home. Features Hybrid Image Stabilization and near-silent Ultrasonic (USM) focusing.
I've got this and can't say enough good things about it. DP Review says it's one of the best lenses they've ever tested. $170 cheaper than B&H too. Snatch it up at this price while you still can.
the older version is just as good, but lacks the images stabilization, and it's half the price. I own both, the L is very nice indeed, but not near twice as nice.
this is certainly nice and would probably pick it up if i were a pro. however, i'm just a beginner and would like more range than a fixed 100mm lens...do you guys have any recommendations for lenses $500 and less? i have the nifty fifty which is indeed pretty sweet for the money
If you buy this lens, it will be for the 2.8 speed, not the zoom.
If you are beginner, stick with your kit lens, usually 28-80mm equiv, and it is a good range to start and you will learn the trade off between speed, weight and price. The entry level DSLRs take very good pictures in most conditions.
I have a 7D and my 17-55mm/2.8 is on it most of the time (equiv 28-90mm). Available light is want I need for in door use.

Damn, costs more than the camera.
That really depends on which camera...
The refurbished t2i up a little further for $650. Now that's a good camera.
This is a "L" lens. The professional series and they are tools for the trade, not just camera lens.
