Canon has the refurbished Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens for $320 - $60 off in cart + $16 shipping = $276 shipped. Features an ultrasonic motor for near silent focusing and is a solid upgrade from the budget f/1.8 50mm lens that is often referred to as the 'nifty fifty'.
#1 Never bought a refurbished from them, though I have had Canon repair a lens. I'd say they should be OK. This is a comparatively simple lens and it should be safe enough with the 1 year warranty. If I didn't just get one for $336 last week I'd jump on this one.
The main difference between this and the 50mm f/1.8 is that this one is more solid, auto-focus faster, micro USM (but not ring USM), full time manual focus (leave in in AF, but use manual focus to fine tune after AF if necessary) and, of course, 2/3 stops faster.
As long as it is refurbished by Canon, you should be on safe ground. I bought the T3i refurbished from Canon and it was like new....have had it a few months and it works perfectly.
Canon refurbished products are as new...and you get the added benefit of each lens actually being checked and calibrated (if needed) by a technician. I'd be very comfortable buying refurbished, and have in the past (my 5DMkII & 35L was bought refurbished).
Do any of you know the reputation of Canon refurb lenes?
You can get the OTHER famous lens, new, for under $100. That 55mm, I think. I have one and it works miracles.

Also note that you're going to get hit with sales tax. For me, that added another $17.
