Canon has the refurbished Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens for $320 + $16 shipping = $336 shipped. Features an ultrasonic motor for near silent focusing and is a solid upgrade from the budget f/1.8 50mm lens that is often referred to as the 'nifty fifty'.
These allow fast shutter speeds, low light, or small depth of field photography. I know it's hard to stomach the price for a fixed lens, but they really are worth it if you are into photography at all.
I got a "nifty fifty" and a "jive 35", for my Nikon d90. They are nice to have. No zoom of coruse, but very sharp pics and nice bokeh.

good little lens, weak focus motor, be careful with the front element. always set it on it's rear when not mounted.
