Price is nice. this is the one of the must have lens for any ghetto dogs who owns a canon slr. Indeed very sharp and fast, fun to take portrait photo with.
Great lens for the price. I used it often until I upgraded to the 1.4 lens.
the price of this lens typically varies between $65 - $90 on amazon. Currently it is at $85. I've bought this lens at $70. This is "typical pricing" in my opinion.
A must have budget lens every Canon DSL owner should have...
or i've heard it's called the "plastic fantastic"
BEST LENS.... for the price and quality.
The leg zoom is a little weird at first. LOL
For me the best thing about the lens is that its really the only fast lens you can get for under $100 - period. Not to mention $200 or $300. So if you have a canon SLR and want to take pictures at night without making the subjects completely still for one second, this is the cheapest option that there is.
Decent all plastic lens that all Canon SLR/DSLR users should have in their kit (not the best price though). Pair with a 1.4x or 2x converter and you've got a GREAT portrait lens.
woh! i will hunt one!
wait, the shipping is $3.80 but still a good deal!
do not forget FOC of 1.6 on most entry level canon DSLR - XS, XT, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D etc. So 50 x 1.6 = 80mm so this is a great portrait lens even without a multiplier on these bodies.
#5) Around here, we call it the "thrifty 50".
/seems to be regular price for this lens. Bought mine for about $80 shipped at adorama ~2 years back IIRC
#3 Lenn says it all, it's within the typical pricing range. Not a deal!
And indeed as #5 asahwu, this lens has a plastic ring connector, you can imagine the quality. On the other hand, it is a good fast prime lens to start photography for portrait or in low light condition.
By comparison, Nikon's 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens has a slightly higher price but with a metal ring, much more durable that of Canon's counterpart. Well, you got what you pay for.

Definitely a GREAT lens and a must have for any cannon DSLR owner. I'm just a little wary of Abes of Maine though. My experience with them has been that they will NOT process your order until you call them so that a sales rep can try and sell you other items first.
Beware! Abes of Maine tried to employ the hard sell after I tried to order a TV. They wanted to sell me a warranty and upgraded mounts, etc. When I refused and just wanted the TV they didn't want to sell it for the price they advertised. I canceled and will never attempt to haggle with ol' Abe again.
S They aren't even in Maine. duh!
Abes of Maine in Brooklyn no doubt...
If you have a Canon DSLR and don't have this lens, you are an rodeo cowboy unworthy to suck it dry.
If you're scared to buy from Abe's, I've never had issues from B&H. I got this lens from them and it's still kickin' years later. Love it for those low-light indoor situations or at dusk.
Have none of you ever heard of bait and switch? Have fun, and don't blame anyone but yourself.
This is a very good lens. The construction is not the best and the AF is slow, but it takes awesome pictures and is a great value. I read somewhere that Canon produces this lens for markets it to photography students who cannot afford to plunk down hundreds on a higher end 50mm.
