Canon has the refurbished Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens for $80 with free shipping. This is a best-value prime lens for your Canon SLR that is both very fast and very sharp. It is often referred to as the 'nifty fifty'.

This one doesn't look like it holds much coffee.

I agree, great lens. If you have a Canon SLR and don't have this you are missing out.

    You're kidding, right?

If not, when it comes to max aperture, the lower the number, the better.

This is a good deal. I paid $99 for mine.
Very light weight. Look kind of cheap and silly on my 7D. but it take good pictures.

#5, can you provide an elaborate illustration to why f1.8 "is not that good"?

I own both the 50mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.8 lenses and paid about $350 and $70 respectively for them. They both take great pictures for sure, so why pay the extra?

For starters the f1.4 is WAY more durable but you can also make the argument that you can buy four f1.8 lenses for that price, so just buy a new one if it breaks.

There is a noticeable difference in picture quality between the two if you know what to look for. The f1.8 has more chromatic aberrations and is softer at the corners, overall just not quite as sharp as the f4 The f1.8 also doesn't have the same level of contrast as the f1.4 when shooting at the same stop on each.

I think the f1.4 is also a little faster to focus, and a whole lot quieter than the f8

Overall, for the money I'd take the f1.4 every time but not everyone is willing to spend $350+ on a lens without zoom or IS. For those people, there is the f8 Regardless, if you don't own one of these lenses, you're a complete rodeo cowboy who's probably shooting with your 18-55 f3.5-f5.5 kit lens.

Years ago when I used my Nikon 35mm film camera a lot, I had a 50mm f1.4 lens on it (pretty much standard issue those days for Nikons). One of the guys in the dorm had a Nikon 55mm f1.2 lens. Man, what a conversation piece! Great big hunk of glass. But not much else going for it. Significant dropoff in the corners, not quite as sharp, lots bulkier and heavier, and all for a measly 1/2 stop gain.

Pretty poor build quality, but at that price it's to be expected. Also read reviews and specs at http://photonotes.org/cgi-bin/lens-specs.pl?lens1=EF+50mm+f1.8+II
